first "spring" hike of 2020. kootenai canyon.

"The mountains are calling, and I must go."

We went up Kootenai for a several hour hike a couple of days ago, and it was our first hike this year that actually felt like spring.

We woke up to another dusting of snow this morning, and according to the weather forecast, winter will be appearing again this weekend with colder temps, but it was nice to enjoy a little sunshine and relative warmth in the mountains for a few hours. :)

We enjoyed a longer break up and away from the trail at our turnaround point.
More views and sunshine. What a wonderful day for a hike in the mountains!

Good times in the mountains!
It's always hard to leave to go back, but time was up and supper was calling.

As the afternoon turned into evening on our way out, the sun slipped behind the southern canyon wall. The dramatic contrast of the resulting shade below against the sun shining onto the northern canyon wall up high is always a sight to behold. :)

See you in the next post. Enjoy! :)

sour weather hike + campfire up kootenai. nov 2019.

My friend, Dana, and I had planned a hike well over a week in advance, but as it got closer to the day, the weather forecast didn't sound very exciting. It had been quite some time since our schedules matched up to get out in the mountains together, so we went ahead and got out for our hike and campfire anyway.

Hiking + a campfire + roasting marshmallows = a fun time in the mountains!

With a mix of rain, snow, and graupel coming down on us that day,
everything was pretty wet and there was definitely a very damp chill in the air.

But... we had a good time.

Sometimes you just gotta get out there anyway.
Don't let the weather stop you from having fun! :)

A few pics from our evening hike up Kootenai after supper tonight. We probably spent almost as much time picking huckleberries and thimbleberries as we did actually hiking this time. And of course, there's almost always something along the way to catch my photographic eye, so I have to stop to take a few photos as well. Always a good time. :)

spur-of-the-moment hike up kootenai. july 2019.

Here are some photos from our spur-of-the-moment hike up Kootenai last night. It was totally unplanned. I was sitting around feeling like a slug after supper, looking at my map and planning our next big hike, when I said, "Hey, let's get out for a quick hike right now." So we grabbed our packs and hit the trail about 8pm and came out as it was getting dark a little after 10pm. A good way to finish the day. Hope you enjoy the pics. :)

On another evening hike up Kootenai last night, we were about 3 miles in when we heard some crashing sounds in the brush to our right. We stopped and waited to see what would appear, when this bull moose suddenly came into view. He watched us watch him, not moving on until we did. A wonderful bonus for our after supper hike. Long or short or in between, our hikes are always lots of fun! :)

It was too nice out to stay inside after supper, so we headed up Kootenai for a quick little hike. What a wonderful way to enjoy the last couple hours of daylight tonight. :)

ice falls up kootenai canyon. march 2019.

Spring is working on coming to our part of Montana, but the mountains will remain a winter wonderland for quite some time.

These ice falls up Kootenai were our destination for today's hike. With no movement or sound, the stillness of the frozen water on the rock creates the feeling of a moment frozen in time.

While we always look forward to our destination, we also enjoy the journey along the way. This afternoon's snowy hike gave us numerous reasons to stop and observe our surroundings, which extended the time it took to get to where we were going.

We spotted a mink's slide path down the opposing hillside and into the creek below, as well as various tracks of critters that had been pretty busy going to and fro.

We stepped over moose droppings in the trail from a cow moose we had seen in the area on last week's hiking/snowshoe trek. (At first it had appeared that she was lying down, but it quickly became evident that she was instead standing in snow up to her belly.)

We observed a waterfall on the canyon wall created by snow melt, which is a common sight and sound this time of year.

And we hiked over extra snow and debris deposited on the trail from an avalanche that had slid from above, over the trail, and continued down the other side of the steep slope until it finished settling into the bottom of the creek. (This had occurred quite recently - sometime since last week's trip in Kootenai.)

Today was a beautiful day with blue sky and sunshine, and as the day warmed up, the trail continued to get worse. The farther we went, the more we were post-holing through the deep snow. But as usual, we enjoyed the opportunity to get out for a hike in our beautiful mountains.

And to our surprise, there were no cars at the trailhead when we arrived (which is very unusual for Kootenai), so we enjoyed the solitude of having the trail completely to ourselves going in.

the mountains are calling. november 2018.

I had originally planned to do some errands and go to the gym today, but when the snow and rain had cleared, my earlier post of hiking up Kootenai Canyon last month inspired me to change my plans and get out there again today.

I called my husband to let him know of our change of plans (it's always wise to let someone know when you are heading into the mountains), and he said, "Don't you know there's a storm coming? It's hailing here right now." (He was currently working to the north of us, and we were headed in that direction.) I figured we weren't planning to go far, we're used to hiking in inclement weather in the mountains, and we always go prepared... so we stuck with our plans. The mountains are calling, and we must go. :)

Although we saw the foreboding clouds moving in from the north on our drive to the trailhead, my hiking companions (aka our youngest three daughters) are game for anything I'm wanting to do in the mountains. So we trekked in for our quick 1-1/2 hour hike before supper. We kept up a good pace, enjoyed a quick break, and headed back.

Picture

Sure enough, the weather began to change quite rapidly on our way back out. It got colder and darker as the clouds began moving in. As we arrived back to the trailhead, the clouds and snow had completely moved in and surrounded us. But... as usual, we had a great time. :)

I love trail hiking, but I also enjoy exploring off trail to see what can't be seen from the trails. We've found a wonderful area up Kootenai Canyon far away from the trail where we like to go up and hang out for a bit. There is just so much to discover "out there". I took this photo on our way back down to the trail below. Fun times! :)

finding solitude on an afternoon hike up kootenai.

Beauty and tranquility await. Seek and you shall find.

Part of St. Mary's Mtn. on the north side. Too close to see the top.

Heading way back into the mountains is the best way to find solitude, but when we don't have enough time for that, we discovered we can find a bit of solitude even on the busiest of trails by going up, up, up on the side until we get far enough away that we are out of sight and sound of the trail below. The mountainsides are pretty sloped, but we explore around until we find a wonderful flat spot or rock area from which we can enjoy the views.

On this afternoon hike up a very familiar trail close to home, we spent about two hours hiking and exploring, and an hour and a half basking in the beautiful sunshine, enjoying the peaceful views and the sounds of the creek running along the bottom of the canyon below.
