What a nice surprise we discovered this morning near the pond ... a new little fawn tucked away in the vegetation. This was the closest I've ever been to such a small little baby deer (about 3-4 feet), as it was hidden right next to where we walk along the pond's edge. It certainly will be fun to watch this little one as she gets bigger and starts walking around here with her mama. :) A family of geese joined me on our pond today while I was quietly paddling a few laps around in the kayak. I love to watch (and photograph) the wildlife. Enjoy! :) Well ... we took a quick evening trip to the refuge to look for the great-horned owls again this year, but no success on spotting them this time out. I knew that was a possible outcome, so my secondary plan was to simply walk along quietly to see what else we could see. We always see something ... this time it included a mallard duck enjoying a little solitude on the water, several robins (a couple with a bit of character), a yellow-bellied sapsucker playing peek-a-boo, various butterflies fluttering about, and a porcupine hanging on for dear life up in a tree. We also saw a large herd of deer and a few other things I didn't get photos of, but I had a bit of fun with the ones I did manage to take. There were many butterflies fluttering about ... landing only for a moment or two here and there. This one actually remained still for a little bit. He seemed to think he was camouflaged with these pebbles as he sat motionless. We always enjoy spotting porcupines, as we find them to be very interesting animals. This one looks like he's hanging on for dear life on that skinny little branch. He certainly doesn't look very comfy up there. The girls and I had planned on getting in a 10-mile bike ride after lunch to clock some miles toward our goal for this year. We were all set to go... on schedule, with energy and a bit of sunshine. But the phone rang just as we were headed out the door. You guessed it... interruption time. Something else required our attention. For the next few hours. Our bike ride had to be postponed until after supper. But after supper the weather wasn't as nice as it had been, nor was my energy level up to par after dealing with the unexpected circumstances earlier in the day, and then making supper, eating, and taking care of supper cleanup afterwards. I contemplated just not going. I simply didn't feel like it. This day was one of those days. You know... when you just don't feel like it. But then I thought about our goal. So I decided we would head out and at least get in a quick 5-mile ride. Better some than not at all. But as usual, after getting started I felt better. We ended up doing our 10 miles after all. Even though we got started fairly late, we still got back before dark and enjoyed a lovely late evening view of St. Mary's Mountain along the way. Sometimes I just don't feel like doing something, so I have to make up my mind to just do it regardless of how I feel. If my mind says I'm going to do something, my body has a way of following along. And I always feel better afterwards. So when you have those times and you just don't feel like it... give it a try. Remember your goals and just do it. :) Whatever your dreams may be... Will it be easy? No... probably not. Not if it's a meaningful and worthwhile goal to you. You will find the path to success to be full of setbacks and failures, with the need to persevere through the rough times. You will discover some things to be easy along the way, but many things will likely be difficult enough to make you contemplate giving up. It will be a battle. Is it doable? Yes... most likely --> if. If you want it bad enough to be determined to find a way no matter how many tries it may take. Hang in there and don't give up. We don't always have time to get in the bigger hikes we really like, but because we are so closely surrounded by the mountains, we are blessed with being able to get out for quick little hikes every now and then, too. It's just a matter of deciding to do it and then following through. Like this quick little after-supper evening jaunt we took up Big Creek recently. A 3-mile hike that took us an hour (plus a little driving time). Wildflowers have a special way of capturing my attention anywhere I go, and I love how they are ever changing throughout spring, summer, and fall. The glacier lilies and trillium are in full bloom on many of the trails this time of year, but the trillium are especially abundant along Big Creek. These quick little hikes aren't nearly as exciting as the larger ones, but it's always wonderful to get out and enjoy a little exercise in nature and experience the changing landscape through the various seasons. A nice alternative to sitting around on the couch feeling like a bump on a log. :) It was a beautiful spring day with sunshine and blue skies for a nice 7-mile afternoon hike up Bass Creek the other day. Spring brings extra waterfalls spilling down the sides of the canyon walls. The sound of the water seemed especially refreshing while hiking in the hot sun. As always, we enjoyed the lovely views while getting a bit of exercise in the wonderful outdoors. :)
