my 1st time sleeping out in subzero temps (-23f). jan '24

I wanted to test out some changes to my winter camping setup to see if I could get down to a lower temp than I usually camp in, but without the extra sleeping pad. I always test any major changes to my cold weather camping system at home, so if it doesn't work out well, I can bail inside. Then when I head back into the mountains, I know what to bring to keep me safe and warm without taking too much or too little.

With our January cold snap upon us, this was my chance. I was actually just planning to test down how low above zero I could go, but then my husband said I should try out sleeping in the extra frigid subzero temps to see if I could. I wasn't so sure about sleeping out in -20's (F), but decided, "Why not?!" LOL! It was a fun experiment for me, and thought I'd share it with you.

I apologize for the low quality of the nighttime video. I was more focused on my efforts to stay warm enough, than I was on producing a top quality video. The video was just about documenting my experience.

Thanks for watching! I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments. :)

We got a little taste of winter at our house last night. They say more snow is headed our way tomorrow night, along with colder temps hitting just a touch below zero this weekend. Brrr! That's fall in Montana! ;)

It was a bit crisp out there this October morning, but snow has a way of adding a special touch of beauty to our views. Since we don't get to choose our weather, we take what we get and enjoy it for what it is. :)

We did indeed hit our low of 29'F this morning as the weather forecast predicted. It's a little brisk, but not bad. And we got a bit more snow on St. Mary's Peak this morning as well. This is a zoomed in view of the fire lookout tower from our house. Bet the guy manning it right now has an awesome view today!! :)

It was definitely a windy fall day for my walk/run this morning! I discovered this little home in the trees, wavering in the wind but holding strong. It fared much better than the aspen tree that snapped in half and fell across our path today!

Not an actual sighting yet, but circumstantial evidence reveals our yearly visitor has returned. I discovered this recent bear scat at our place today. Time for us to be on high alert again when out and about. Wildlife abounds! :)
