Today I've decided to feature another fabulous artisan in my local area... D.K. Wilson of Visions in Wood. I have seen her work at local shows, and I can personally testify that she makes amazing pieces of gourd art. Each piece is unique and has its own character. You can visit her website to see more of her work (made in Victor, Montana), or if you are in the Missoula / Bitterroot Valley area, you can stop by and see D.K. and her gourds in person at the Montana Art Festival, Nov. 28th-30th at the Hilton Garden Inn in Missoula.

Fascinating! I love the colors and the use of the antler as a handle.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I, too, like the antler handle, but because using antlers in things is pretty common in Montana, it doesn't stand out to me much anymore. The lizard art is more of a southwest thing and not seen around here as much, so that is what really caught my eye the most out of these pieces. Between the shape of that piece along with the lizard artwork, I find that one to be especially intriguing. D.K. Wilson has many interesting works of gourd art at her shows. They are always fun to look at. :)

I really admire gourd art. We have a gourd festival our rural community farmer's market each Fall.

I love the contrast between the lights and the darks on the lizard gourd. Do you know if the dark shades are burnt? painted? carved in shallow relief? A combination of all three? She's definitely using paint to get some of the colors, but it almost looks like there's some additional dimension to the pieces.
