blodgett canyon winter hike. february 2022.

I recently realized that of all my years of hiking into Blodgett Canyon in all seasons with various types of weather, (including a backpack trip and an off-trail side trek to the horsehead arch), that I don't have any posts of Blodgett on my blog yet. That's crazy!!

I have so many mountain adventures that I've never gotten around to sorting pics for and posting, but will hopefully eventually get caught up. Anyway, for now, this winter hike from about a year ago will give you a glimpse into Blodgett Canyon. :)

Picture
Blodgett has some pretty nice views on the drive in to the trailhead.

Picture
A bit of snow at the trailhead. Winter isn't leaving anytime soon. :)

Picture
I was surprised to find the parking lot had been plowed.
It hasn't always been the case in past winters.

Picture
Plenty of views to be seen from the trail.

Picture
Trudging through snow is to be expected on winter mountain hikes.
The farther in you go, the deeper it gets. Plenty of snow fun! ;)

Picture
I always love views of the craggy cliffs!

Picture
Either the snow was moving in on us, or we were moving into it? I think a combination, as the weather was definitely changing as we headed further into the canyon!

Picture
I love the special atmosphere of inclement weather.
It definitely pays to not be just a fair-weather hiker anymore. :)

Picture
More snow ahead, as some of the usual mountain views are obscured here now.
We were expecting snowy weather and are prepared, so we carry on. :)

Picture
The sun lowering over the southern ridge. Days are still short this time of year.

Picture
Blodgett Creek at the bridge, looking west further into the canyon.
Views obscured by the snow.

Blodgett Creek at the bridge, looking east towards the valley.

Picture
The sun's brightness was diminished by the snow, but not entirely hidden.

Picture
The snow was getting thicker as we got to our turnaround point for the day.

Picture
Zoomed in view of the Horsehead Arch. Barely visible with the snow, but interesting. Better pics of this in other posts to come from some of my fair-weather hikes. :)

Picture
The bridge at 3 miles in,
allowing for an easy crossing of the creek as the trail crosses to the other side.

Picture
Starting to see more as the snow begins to clear out.

Picture
After snowing pretty heavily on us for a time coming back out,
(I tucked my camera safely away for a bit),
the storm passed over and turned into a partial blue-sky day.
The weather can definitely change very quickly "out here". :)

Picture
Quite different from earlier. The weather changes our views dramatically!

Picture
More of the distant mountains are beginning to reappear.

Picture
Flathead Buttress, Shoshone Spire, and Nez Perce Spire.

From the bottom of the canyon, these look like the top of the ridge,
but when you see them from above at Blodgett Overlook,
you realize they are only about halfway up!

Picture
I think I want to make an attempt to get up there someday. Adding it to my list! :)

Picture
Well, I finally succeeded in getting one of my Blodgett hikes added to my blog.
Hope you enjoyed the pics ... keep your eyes out for more to come. :)
