Home Canned Carrots

Well, here are the fruits (or should I say vegetables) of my labor some of these past few days. I guess I should also say "our" labor, as I did not do this by myself. I am blessed to have my family's help, as growing and preserving food is a family endeavor at our house. Thankfully, the girls are delighted to help (they especially love to peel), as many hands make light work. And my son and husband do their share of helping, too, so all together we make a good team. :)

This is just part of our carrots; we're not finished yet. We are planning to can enough to have 1-2 jars a week for a year. We are also dehydrating some of our carrots for throwing in soups, chicken noodles, etc. We usually shred those before drying so they rehydrate and cook up faster. Not much beats the satisfaction of cooking meals with your own produce during the year. Maybe snuggling up with your own handmade blankets, but they run a close race. :)

I love preserving home-grown produce and seeing the much valued results of our labor. Some of the most delightful parts of it all are removing the jars from the canner, hearing the ping of the lids as they cool, and seeing the jars all lined up and ready for the pantry. And the icing on the cake is that canning is another thing that reminds me of my grandma and grandpa. I have many fond memories of helping my grandpa outside on the farm in his working years, and in the garden in his retirement years... and helping my grandma inside with baking, cooking, and crafting... along with, you guessed it, canning. :)

I hope you enjoyed my post... if so, I'd be delighted to hear your thoughts in the comments, and be sure to share some of your own experiences as well. :)

Conquering Fears

10/17/2014

One of my fears of trekking off into the wilderness with just me and the girls is the possibility of coming across a mountain lion or bear. It's always made me a bit uneasy being the only adult in the crowd to be able to handle such a serious situation. But I have come a long ways in conquering this fear, and we have been doing a lot of hiking just us girls, in addition to our adventures with my son and/or husband along.
Picture
So, I came face to face with my fear of mountain lions on this hike. I had a decision to make... to go or not to go. The girls had no hesitation, but I did. After all, I was the one responsible for our safety.

I decided it was time to proceed further with conquering my fears. This was the next level. So we went ahead and I kept an extra eye out all along the way. We didn't get as far as usual, because the terrain is quite rocky and much of the time the trail follows along a steep side that you do not want to fall off of, all of which makes it difficult to keep an eye out along the upper area for mountain lions prowling around while not stumbling. So I stopped frequently to scan the high ground and the trail behind (in case any were stalking).

The end... until next time.

Two weeks ago, we came out to Kootenai Creek for a quick 2-hour hike after running errands in town. In addition to the special notice on the trail head sign, the sign below was also posted right next to the beginning of the trail to make sure hikers don't miss it. This sighting was only 8 days before we came.

As you can see, we did live to tell about it. :) Thankfully, we didn't see any sign of them, although my son always says they are around all the time, we just don't see them. We have seen their tracks in the past, seen hunters come out with them, and hear of others seeing them from time to time. In fact, shortly after moving out here, my husband's nephew saw three of them in the parking lot of this very same trail head. Of course, you know that went through my mind when I saw that sign!

Autumn = Beautiful Colors + Hiking

10/15/2014

I'm sitting here in my living room on a very blustery fall day in my part of Montana, waiting for fresh homemade bread to come out of the oven. Along with the rain, it's raining pine needles carried with the wind. Looking out the window, I see the beautiful colors of fall all around.

Which reminds me of our hike a few days ago up Mill Canyon. The girls and I had some errands to do down south, so we decided to work in a quick hike while we were out that way. We had a 3-hour time frame and weren't sure if we had time to make it to the falls this time or not, but it was such a beautiful day for a hike, it didn't really matter. I love to hike any time of year, but autumn is my favorite time and we love to get out whenever we can.

The sun really brings out the autumn glory of the trees.

Mill Canyon trail head signs.

We try to remember to stop at the trail head signs to look for any pertinent information before we start hiking. Such as notices of bears or mountain lions recently seen in the area, etc.

The trail starts out on the south side of Mill Creek and crosses over a bridge to the north side. The bridge here is a brand new bridge just put in this year after the water level went down. This spring's high water took out the old log bridge that used to cross over the creek.
Picture
Brand new bridge crossing Mill Creek about a half mile up Mill Canyon.

While the old log bridge was more rustic looking, it was unsafe in spring when the water is high and a full rolling whitewater rapids is ready to quickly carry you away if you should slip on the wet log while crossing to the other side. Any kind of bridge would suit this time of year when the water is low (wouldn't even really need a bridge at all, as you can see), but I will be very happy with this new bridge come spring again.

Earlier this year while the bridge was out, we took the Cow Creek access on the north side of the canyon. That trail runs along higher up on the canyon side until it meets up with the Mill Canyon trail on the other side of Mill Creek just past the bridge.

The views are ever changing, as the cliffs tower overhead unbelievably high, the numerous rock fields pop into view, and then we traverse back into the trees along the stream for a refreshing bit of shade.

The camera never does the views justice... this is just a very small glimpse.

This area of Mill Canyon was burned in the fires of 2000. This view shows a glimpse of the remains along with the new growth that is working to reclaim the canyon once again.

I love the sights and sounds of the water along with moss covered rocks.

Well, we really rushed along, so we were able to make it to the falls in time (3 miles in).

The water was way down compared to earlier in the year, so I didn't bother to take pics of the falls this time around. But the green on the rocks in the water really caught my eye, so I couldn't resist snapping this photo.

Although it was a bit hot hiking in the sun most of the way (because of the lack of shade from the trees that were lost due to the fire), we had a great time. Since we were short on time, we only had about a 10-minute break before heading back, as the girls wanted to pick the elderberries we had seen along the way. Picking wild fruit always adds excitement to their hikes.

I'll be back to post some pics of our earlier Mill Canyon hike one of these days, along with numerous other hikes and such, so stay tuned for more... :)

Back to selling patterns again...

10/6/2014

I know, I know... you guys must be thinking, "Make up your mind."

Well, let me explain...
Picture
I originally started selling my patterns by request quite some time ago on Etsy. I did relatively well, considering that I had only gotten about 20 patterns written up and uploaded. The problem is that my main focus is making and selling my finished items, leaving little time leftover to devote to pattern writing of my designs. And with Etsy's fee platform, it is best to really build a good shop with a lot of selections. Since the patterns aren't my main focus, I decided to let that go for now.

But I recently discovered that Ravelry has a different kind of fee platform that would make it much more feasible for me to list a few patterns here and there as I am able to set aside extra time for it. And I also received another pattern request recently. So... I am now setting up my patterns for sale on Ravelry. If you knit or crochet, take a look and bookmark my shop. I will add more as I can, and if you have a particular request in the meantime, be sure to contact me with it. :)
