Mmmm... homemade apple pie like Grandma used to make.

I have many cherished memories of time spent at Grandma and Grandpa's house, both on the farm, and later when they moved to the nearby small town when they retired from the farming life. Grandma knew how much I loved her homemade cherry and apple pies, and always either had one waiting for me when I would come to visit, or would bake one while I was there.
Grandma was an important role model in my life, and I enjoyed spending time with her in the kitchen, whether that was baking pies, making homemade egg noodles, or snapping string beans that Grandpa had brought in from the garden. The food was always delicious at Grandma's house!

I don't get around to it very often, but last night I saw the apples sitting in the fruit basket on the table and just couldn't resist! The girls love to pitch in and help, and love to eat the apple peelings and the dough scraps I bake up with cinnamon sugar sprinkled on. I hope I'm making memories with them, like Grandma did with me. :)

If anyone wants the recipe, you can find it in Betty Crocker's cookbook. My grandma gave me a copy like hers as part of my bridal shower gift, and it has gotten so much use that it is falling apart. Every time I get it out to bake something, I think of her. :)

Yum is right! Apple pie is comfort food and fresh picked apples make the best pies. Apple pie means sweet memories of the past and sweet memories being made now with your daughters. One of life's simple pleasures!

I also loved Grandma's cherry pies... made from the cherries on her backyard cherry tree! :) I'm going to make a cherry pie for Thanksgiving coming up soon (with frozen tart cherries from the store), along with the pumpkin pie for my husband and some of my daughters. I really should make pie a little more often, but after all of the other things I do in a day, I rarely feel like it. It truly is comfort food, especially when fresh baked and still warm from the oven. :)

Am sitting here looking at the photos and trying not to drool on the keyboard. Wonder if that's the same apple pie recipe I use? My Mom gave me her old 1954 Betty Crocker cookbook when I graduated from university and had starred all her favorite recipes, one of which was the apple pie (: Have made it many, many times. That cookbook is always a "go to" cookbook. Mine has been taped back together so many times. Yay! for your Grandmother and my Mom.

I would have been happy to share a slice with you if you lived nearby. :) My guess is that it is the same recipe. It's a great cookbook and was a wonderful bridal shower gift. A great graduation gift, too. :) Mine is falling apart so badly, I need to place the pages in a binder in protective sleeves. Or find another one just like it and stick this one away as a memento. :)

Thanks for the compliment, Anna. I love the combination of flaky crust with the apples... too bad you can't eat the crust. My grandmother was diabetic and couldn't eat pie. When my first-born daughter was old enough to eat more than just baby food, my grandma would feed the cherries from the pie to her, and then eat the crust with a little cherry residue herself. Diet restrictions can be pretty tough to deal with, so it is important to find things you really like that fit within those restrictions, so you don't feel like you are missing out too much. My big thing to watch out for and avoid is MSG, so it's a good thing that I don't like Chinese food!

Your apple pie is reminding me of my dad's pies. He does a variation on an apple pie where he adds a little almond paste to the crust on the bottom, then adds some cranberries, and then finally apples. It's really tasty.

Unfortunately, my kids won't eat pie so I have to settle for cakes and cookies when it comes to building family culinary traditions.
